On this map we can see the actual tobacco use per country. It displays the percentage of the adult population (aged 15 and over) that use any tobacco product on a daily or non-daily basis. This includes not only any type of smoking tobacco (e.g. cigarettes, cigars, pipes), but also any other type of tobacco consumption, like chewing tobacco.
The biggest smoker in Africa is South Africa, where 31% of the population smokes. Lesotho comes in second, where 30% smokes. Madagascar is third, with 29%.
The lowest percentage of smokers can be found in Ghana (4%), Ethiopia, Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe (5%).
Using the data for tobacco use, gives a much better and more realistic picture than using the data for tobacco consumption per country. The data for tobacco use, measures only the actual usage of tobacco products by the adult population of the specific country.
If you’re curious about other continents, I’ve made maps about the tobacco use in Asia and Europe as well.
