Many health experts recommend people walk or cycle at least 30 minutes every day. These easy types of exercise can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance.

As we can see on this map, the amount of people that actually manage to do enough exercise every day, varies a lot. There isn’t any country in Europe where the majority of adults walks or cycles at least 30 minutes every day. There is one country that comes close: the Netherlands. With 44.0% of Dutch adults walking or cycling at least 30 minutes every day, it has by far the highest percentage of any country in Europe. The Dutch cycling culture definitely is a big contributor to that high number.

Slovakia (25.4%) and Denmark (25.3%) also stand out. In both countries, more than a quarter of the adult population walks or cycles at least 30 minutes per day. These three countries also have a lower obesity rate compared to other European countries.

It’s interesting to see that the percentage gets lower as one moves further south in Europe (with the exception of Iceland). Spain (5.5%), Turkey (3.4%), Portugal (2.8%), Malta (2.3%) and Cyprus (0.1%) have by far the lowest percentage of adults that walk or cycle at least 30 minutes per day. Especially the percentage in Cyprus is shockingly low.

Data for this map comes from Eurostat.
