Recently, we looked at the life expectancy in Asia and Europe at the regional level. This time, we’re going to look at the life expectancy in Africa in more detail.
The highest life expectancy at birth can be found in Northern Africa. Especially Algeria has a much higher life expectancy than other African countries, with most Algerian areas having a life expectancy in the high 70s. The French island of Réunion is the only place with a higher life expectancy than Algeria in Africa (80.7).
Other African areas outside of Northern Africa with a relatively high life expectancy are Cabo Vere, Mauritius, Seychelles, Tanzania, Sudan, Senegal, Malawi, Rwanda and Gabon. The Somalian capital of Mogadishu also stands out. Especially since the rest of Somalia has some of the lowest life expectancy in Africa.
The lowest life expectancy can be found in the Sahel region. The Central African Republic, South Sudan, Niger and Northern Nigeria have some of the lowest life expectancies in the world.
The data for this map comes from the Global Data Lab.
