How many years will children in Asia spend on average in the education system?

A while ago, we looked at how long people in Asia are in the education system on average. That map showed the average number of years that people over 25 have spend in the education system. As it included a very broad demographic group, it showed quite some differences with the amount of time children spend in the education system today. Both datasets sound similar, but show a very different type of information. As they’re both very interesting topics, I’ decided to make a map about the expected years of schooling as well.

We can see that the expected years of schooling varies quite wildly around Asia. There’s almost a 10 year difference between the lowest and highest country. Keep in mind though, that this doesn’t necessarily say something about the quality of the education.

Turkey has the highest expected years of schooling in Asia, 18.3 years. Hong Kong (17.3), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (16.5), Bahrain (16.3), Israel and Saudi Arabia (16.1) are the only other Asian countries with a number of 16 years or higher.

The lowest numbers can be found in Pakistan (8.7), Yemen (9.1) and Syria (9.2). These are also the only Asian countries where the expected years of schooling is below 10 years.
