Although the United States has a reputation for having a high gun death rate, it has nowhere near the highest rate in the world. For that, we need to head further south in the America’s. The global top 25 has 5 South American countries in it. Ranked number one in the world is Venezuela with a rate of 461.97. Colombia (188.62) ranks 10th globally and Brazil 12th (172.13).
The lowest rates in South America can be found in Chile (17.44), Peru (22.17) and Argentina (29.70). Although they all have a lower gun death rate than the US, which has a gun death rate of 46.68, it is still higher than every European country except Albania (24.82) and Turkey (17.44).
The data for this map comes from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Suicides by firearms are not included in this map.
