A safe workplace is vital for people to be able to do their work properly and safely. Safety regulations and the enforcement of those regulations, still varies across Europe. Even with good regulations and enforcement in place, fatal accidents still happen in the workplace. On this map we’re going to look where accidents in the workplace occur more often.
The difference around Europe are quite big. Latvia (42.9) and Lithuania (37.5) have by far the highest rates of fatal accidents in the workplace. Malta (33.4), France (33.2) and Romania (31.1) also have a pretty high rate.
The lowest rates can be found in northern and western Europe. The Netherlands has by far the lowest rate in Europe (3.3). Finland (7.5), Sweden (7.7), the UK (7.8), Germany (8.4) and Greece (8.8) also have a relatively low rate.
Data for this map comes from Eurostat. Eurostat defines an accident at work as a discrete occurrence in the course of work which leads to physical or mental harm. It includes all accidents in the course of work, whether they happen inside or outside the premises of the employer, on the premises of another employer, in public places or during transport (including road traffic accidents or accidents in any other mean of transportation) and at home (such as during teleworking). It also includes cases of acute poisoning and willful acts of other persons. It does not include commuting accidents (accidents that occur during the normal journey to or from home and place of work), deliberate self-inflicted injuries, accidents from strictly natural causes, accidents that are purely private and accidents to members of the public, even if such an accident is due to a work activity within a company. The same definition is used in all countries on this map.
