Living in a city can be stressful. A lot of people are living close together which can cause noise pollution, traffic congestions and just feel crowded. Furthermore, cities often have a higher cost of living and have a more high-pressure working culture. But not all cities are the same. As we can see on this map, some cities are more stressful to live in than others.

On this map, we can see 100 major cities that have been rated and ranked by how stressful it is to live in them. The ranking comes from the Stressful Cities Index, compiled by Vaay. In this index, 100 cities were rated based on the following indicators:

Governance:

  • Safety and Security
  • Socio-Political Stability
  • Gender Equality
  • Minority Equality

Finance

  • Unemployment Rate
  • Financial Stress
  • Social Security

City

  • Population Density
  • Traffic Congestion
  • Weather
  • Air Pollution
  • Noise Pollution
  • Light Pollution

Health

  • Mental Health
  • Access to Healthcare
  • Covid Response Stress Impact

The most stressful city by far is Mumbai, with a score of only 1. Lagos (19.9) and Manila (29.4) also scored very poorly. On number 97 we find another Indian city: New Delhi (31.5). A lot of these cities in the bottom 10 are located in developing countries.

On the other end of the ranking, we see mostly countries in Europe and Oceania. Reykjavik is the least stressful city in the world with a full score of 100. Second is Bern (96.6) and in third place are Helsinki and Wellington with both a score of 95.
