In most countries, the number of marriages per 1,000 people has been declining over the past years. On this map, we can see the current marriage rate in different European countries.

Looking at this map, we can see the colours getting darker as we move east. The southwestern European countries have the lowest marriage rates. Italy has the lowest marriage rate of any country in Europe with 3.1 marriages per 1,000 people. Slovenia, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg and France are right behind Italy.

The marriage rate is by far the highest in Kosovo (9.8) and Cyprus (8.9). Albania (7.9) and Lithuania (7) are the only other countries with a marriage rate of 7 or higher.
