Electric Vehicles in the US

In recent years, electric vehicles have become increasingly popular. Especially now more and more people want to do their bit in trying to reduce their CO2 emission. But how popular are electric vehicles in the US?

It might not come as a surprise that California is the state with the highest number of registered electric vehicles per 100,000 people. California doesn’t just have the highest number of electric vehicles per 100,000 people, but also in absolute numbers with 256,800 electric vehicles. 47% of electric vehicles in the US are registered in California.

Other states with a high rate of electric cars, are Hawaii (464), Washington (377) and Oregon (296). Washington is also the state with the second highest number of registered electric vehicles.

Recently, we also had a look at the number of electric vehicles per 100,000 people in Europe. A lot of US states have a far higher rate of electric vehicles than most European countries. Despite its high rate, California still seems no match for Norway, which has a whopping 1,116 electric vehicles per 100,000 people.

The numbers on this map, seem to correlate with electric vehicle related laws and incentives in each state. California has far more laws and incentives related to electric vehicles, making it no surprise that they also have the largest number of electric vehicles in the US.

On this map from the US Department of Energy. we can see the number of incentives and laws each state has related to electric vehicles. As we can see, most of the states with a high number of laws and incentives related to electric vehicles, also have a high rate of electric vehicles per 100,000 people.

In Europe, there is a very similar pattern. Countries with the highest rates of electric vehicles, like Norway and the Netherlands, also have several financially interesting incentives to boost the sales of electric vehicles.
