This map gives us an interesting insight into how many people visit the doctor around Europe. As you can see, the numbers vary widely.

The numbers seem to be the highest in Central Europe. 89.9% of Belgians visited the doctor at least once in the past 12 months. Cyprus (88.8%), Luxembourg (87.0%), Denmark (86.8%) and Germany (85.0%) are the only other countries in Europe with a percentage of 85 or higher.

The lowest shares can be found mostly in southeastern Europe. 53.4% of Romanians visited the doctor in the past 12 months. In Greece (53.8%) and Montenegro (56.4%), that share is also below 60%.

So what does this mean? That’s very hard to say. Are the numbers low because people in that country are very healthy? Are the waiting lists too long? Have people lost faith in the medical sector? Is it a cultural thing? This map shows us an interesting statistic, but it requires a lot more information (many of which is not available yet) to be able to put it into perspective.

Data for this map comes from Eurostat.
