China is one of the most homogenous countries in the world. Only 0.07% of its population are immigrants (the second lowest in the world). Although there are various ethnic minorities living in China, the country overall is not very ethnically diverse. 91.1% of China’s population is Han Chinese. But as we can see on this map, most of them are concentrated in the densely populated east of the country. In most of the dark red areas on the map, more than 99% of the population is Han.
In areas like Tibet, Qinghai and parts of Xinjiang, Sichuan, Guangxi and Yunnan, we see the opposite. In most of those areas, the Han are the minority. In most areas in Tibet, Han Chinese represent less than 10% of the population. Xinjiang (42.2%) and Tibet (12.2%) are the only two provinces where Han Chinese are not the majority.
