Recently we looked at the average annual hours worked in Asia and Europe. This time, we’re taking a closer look at South America.
What we notice straight away, is that the average annual hours worked are not too different from Europe, but much lower than Asia. People in Uruguay (1,533) and Ecuador (1,552) have the lowest average annual hours worked in South America, similar to countries like Switzerland or Belgium.
Peruvians on the other hand, work far more hours a year than most European workers, but also compared to other countries in South America.
Keep in mind that the number of hours worked doesn’t necessarily mean more economic output. We’ve seen in Europe and Asia that working more hours per year, doesn’t result in more GDP output per hour worked.
Data for this map comes from the University of Groningen.
