Recently, Ipsos conducted a survey in 30 countries about sexual orientation and views on same-sex marriage. This map show one of the results of that survey. It shows us what percentage of adults identifies as LGBT+.

First off, it’s good to know in which countries on this map, same-sex marriage or civil union is not legal. In Turkey, Romania, Poland same-sex marriage or civil union or registered partnership, is not legal. The legal status of same-sex marriage and how accepted LGBT+ people are in society, can affect the percentage of people that identify as LGBT+.

The highest percentage of LGBT+ people can be found in Spain, where 14% of adults identify as LGBT+. Second is Switzerland (13%), followed by the Netherlands and the UK (12%).

The lowest percentage can be found in Poland and Ireland. Both are very catholic countries.

For anyone that is curious, A comprehensive evolutionary psychology study from the faculty of Science of the Charles University in Czechia found the self-identifying gay and lesbian population of Czechia to be 9,1% in 2015, of which 6,7% of men considered themselves gay, and 11,5% of women considered themselves lesbian. It is likely higher today, probably around 11-12%, but unfortunately the census in 2021 did not offer it as a question. The findings of the “BE LGBT+ in Czechia in 2022” found an increase of people who previously identified as gay now identify as pansexual or non-binary
