Qunomedical has made an index of European countries in which they rate them based on the quality of their dental care, the Healthiest Teeth Index. In this index, European countries were rated on several indicators related to dental health:

  • DMFT (Decayed, Missing due to caries, and Filled Teeth in the permanent teeth of 12 year olds)
  • Dentists per 100,000 people
  • Dental schools
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Smokers
  • Sugar consumption
  • Community fluoridation

Now, sadly there isn’t a good recent study that has collected information about the actual dental health of a large number of European citizens. The Healthiest Teeth Index is far from perfect, but is probably one of the better ones out there so far. It mostly looks at factors that might predict the condition of people’s teeth. A low number of dentist and dental schools, could result in poor dental health care. High sugar consumption, could result in more cavities and therefore a poorer dental health. As I said, could, not will. So, I would advise you to take the data on this map with a grain of salt.

Which European country has the healthiest teeth? That would be Italy, with a score of 100. Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and the UK also score pretty high.

At the bottom, is Croatia with a score of 0. Slovakia, Latvia and Bulgaria also have a very low score.
