Today, we’re looking at a more interesting and unusual subject, the number of metal bands around Europe. Metal, or heavy metal, is believed to be most popular in northern Europe. This map confirms it.

Metal is already more popular in Europe than other continents, but within Europe there are also some very clear differences. Finland has by far the highest number of metal bands per 1 million people (904.6). Sweden (535.9), Iceland (528.9) and Norway (405.5) are far behind Finland, but still have a rate of metal bands that is far higher than anywhere else in the world.

Apart from northern Europe, there are also a lot of metal bands in central Europe. There is however, one other country that really stands out: Greece. With 238.3 metal bands per million people, it has one of the highest rates of metal bands in Europe.

The country with the highest rate of metal bands outside of Europe, is Chile (166.7), followed by Canada (147.1) and Australia (135.0).

The data for this map comes from Encyclopaedia Metallum, which has an incredibly large and up-to-date register of all the metal bands in every country around the world.
